About the DWQMS
| |
The Drinking Water Quality Management Standard (DWQMS) has been developed to integrate quality management into the operation of all municipal drinking water systems in Ontario. A key recommendation of the Walkerton Inquiry was for municipal water systems to adopt quality management systems based on a Drinking Water Quality Management Standard, which leads to improved operations.
The DWQMS standard specifies the minimum requirements for a quality management system of an operating authority for a drinking water system. In an effort to protect the health of individuals who consume Ontario's drinking-water, every municipality must ensure that an accredited operating authority is in charge of the system. They must also demonstrate that they have an approved operational plan in place.
As a result of Ontario's Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), companies owning municipal residential drinking water systems will now be required to obtain a Municipal Drinking Water Licence in order to operate their waterworks and use their systems. To obtain a licence, owners must have a:
- Certificate of Approval for the facility
- Permit to Take Water
- Approved Operational Plan
- Approved Financial Plan
- Accredited Operating Authority
- Benefits of DWQMS Certification
Achieving DWQMS certification is an accomplishment that will be of great value to your organization and contribute to its overall success. Through certification, your organization:
- Demonstrates compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act's requirements
- Establishes a systematic and standardized operational approach to quality management
- Demonstrates efficient business operations to stakeholders
- Ensures efforts are made towards continually improving and refining business activities
- Improves staff responsibility, commitment, and motivation due to the regular assessment process
- Identifies existing strengths on which to build and weaknesses that can be addressed and corrected
- Implements a system that demonstrates due diligence with respect to regulatory and process requirements
- Ensures effective communication of your commitment to providing safe drinking-water
